Introducing AKT – Our Newest Mindful Natal® Partner

We love to work with brands that align with our values, and AKT certainly do that! With their inclusive, mindful approach, we love what they are doing to keep people feeling dry and comfortable all day long.

What is AKT and how has it come to be the product it is today?

AKT is the award winning natural deodorant that was born to perform. The founders Ed and Andy met performing in the West End in Beautiful: Carole King Musical. It was here performing 8 shows a week under hot lights in the same costumes we realised no deodorant was working.

In fact, when Ed was performing in A Chorus Line at the London Palladium when his co-star turned and said “Ed, you stink!”. We were tired of throwing away clothes because of staining and spraying harsh chemicals onto one of the body’s most sensitive areas, the underarms. This spring boarded the need to create something that worked because everything we tried failed.

We were living together at the time, and had decided to figure it out ourselves by researching and buying in ingredients, then cooking up formulations on the hob in our tiny kitchen. We tested different concoctions on friends, family and cast members with no intention of making a business.

It was after about 3 years we had created a formula that really worked and cast mates and friends started to ask if they could buy a pot. We then thought “maybe we can make a little side hustle here” (…because actors have no money!). We then launched a kickstarter and gifted a sample to every West End performer.

On the day we launched the campaign we hit our target in one hour. By the end of the month we had raised nearly 3x our target and had 3000 orders. So we had a business… AKT was BORN TO PERFORM.

Our Ethos

NATURAL. PLASTIC FREE. GENDER FREE.

We are proud to have developed plastic-free packaging for AKT that’s fit for modern living. The Deodorant Balm is packaged in aluminium tubes ideal for their durability, portability, and recyclability.

Aluminium can forever be recycled without losing any quality. But plastic caps that usually accompany aluminium tubes, can’t. In response, we’ve created bespoke aluminium caps to prevent more plastic entering our ecosystem.

The compromise is that our caps can’t pierce the seal, but simply find something sharp (a pen is ideal) and you’re good to go!

Who uses AKT?

Everyone! Our target audience was initially earth conscious metropolitans but from a recent survey our customers are from all ages, wage brackets and backgrounds.

I guess deodorant is for everyone, right?!

“71% of consumers say they find it hard to find an effective deodorant” (Mintel report) so we know that AKT is changing the landscape for effective self-care.

What is AKT’s goal when it comes to new and expectant parents?

Our number one goal is to give people the confidence to step onto your stage – whatever that may be – and perform.

If you’re becoming or have just become a new Mother/Dad/Parent and time for yourself is tight, AKT will give you the opportunity to carry out an act of self-care every day and give you confidence to go about your day with natural, long-lasting protection.

Do pregnant people perspire more?

Yes, pregnant people may experience increased perspiration due to hormonal changes and an increase in blood volume. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly elevated levels of oestrogen and progesterone, can lead to an increase in body temperature and perspiration. Additionally, the body’s metabolic rate rises during pregnancy, contributing to increased sweating.

Can your sense of smell be affected by pregnancy?

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can affect the sense of smell. Many pregnant individuals report heightened sensitivity to odours, which can range from pleasant scents to unpleasant smells that may trigger nausea or vomiting, particularly during the first trimester. This heightened sense of smell is thought to be related to hormonal changes and may vary in intensity from person to person. AKT have the no-scent option ‘No Notes‘ which is perfect for this time, and for the postnatal period when baby can benefit from less synthetic smells from both parents/care givers.

Can you use deodorant while pregnant?

Yes, it is generally safe for pregnant individuals to use deodorant. However, since some deodorants contain chemicals that may be absorbed through the skin, it’s advisable to be cautious and choose products that are considered safe during pregnancy.

What should those that are pregnant be looking for in their deodorant?

Here’s a helpful checklist for choosing a deodorant during pregnancy:

  1. Ingredients: Opt for deodorants that are free from potentially harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, aluminium compounds (like aluminium chloride), triclosan, and artificial fragrances. Instead, look for natural or organic deodorants made with safe and gentle ingredients.
  2. Aluminium-Free: Some people prefer to avoid deodorants containing aluminium compounds, especially since there’s some debate over their potential links to health issues. While there’s no conclusive evidence that aluminium-based deodorants pose significant risks during pregnancy, individuals may choose aluminium-free alternatives for peace of mind.
  3. Fragrance: Fragrances in deodorants can sometimes trigger sensitivities, particularly during pregnancy when the sense of smell may be heightened. Opt for unscented or lightly scented deodorants to minimise the risk of irritation.
  4. Sensitive Skin Formulas: Pregnancy hormones can make the skin more sensitive, so pregnant individuals may want to choose deodorants specifically formulated for sensitive skin to avoid potential irritation or allergic reactions.
  5. Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant: While antiperspirants are designed to reduce sweating by blocking sweat glands, some pregnant individuals may prefer to use deodorants without antiperspirant properties. If concerned about the potential effects of antiperspirant ingredients, they may opt for deodorants that focus solely on odour control.
  6. Consult with Healthcare Provider: If unsure about specific ingredients or concerned about using any products during pregnancy, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalised advice and recommendations. Our Ask a Midwife chat on the PregnaHub® platform is an easy way to do this!

Ultimately, the goal is to choose a deodorant that effectively controls odour while minimising exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, providing peace of mind for both the pregnant individual and their healthcare provider.
